The earliest emergence of paper was in Egypt some five thousand years ago. Made from papyrus, paper came to play a major role in civilization. In fact, the word "paper" itself is derived from the word papyrus. The paper that Japanese call kami comes from China where two thousand years ago paper was made from hemp and China grass enabling people to write characters as well as draw pictures on a "user-friendly" media. The techniques required to manufacture good paper was generally established at this time. Paper plays an important role in the history of mankind and his culture. It has enfluended the way that mankind has passed on its knowledge from one generation to the next. And it is so closely involved in the development of our culture that we can say that paper has provided the backbone around which modern society and culture has developed.
