This show presents the work of Yamazaki Noboru, who has crafted a wide range of book designs,
including those for everything from academic books, textbooks, and dictionaries to magnificent deluxe
editions of art books. Yamazaki inherited the intellectual methodology and
highly spiritual book design of Hara Hiromu, who established the foundation of Japanese graphic design.
 
The show puts on display items such as the Kokanwajiten that won Gold Medal in the Best Book Design
from All Over the World competition at the Leipzig Book Fair, Munakata Shiko Hanga Zensaku,
a magnificent book the likes of which is rarely published today, photobooks,
and books bound in traditional Japanese fashion, as well as the titles of books handwritten in calligraphy.

Yamazaki Noboru
 
After graduating from Tokyo Metropolitan Kogei High School, joined Nippon Design Center and
studied his craft under Hara Hiromu. Established Yamazaki Design Jimusho in 1998.
Work focuses mainly on the book design of books, deluxe editions, photobooks, and dictionaries,
design supervision for graphic design and fine paper, and the design of notebooks and other stationery.
Winner of the gold medal at the “Best Book Design from all over the World” exhibition in Leipzig, Germany.
Awards include the Japan Book Design Awards, the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th Minister of Education Awards,
the 23rd Minister of International Trade and Industry Award, and the 18th ISOT Stationery of the Year Award for design.
