  • Feature in October 2015 issue of "BRAIN"

"Book Jacket: Senses" is a bi-monthly series made possible
through collaborations with creators using fine paper.
Each issue in this popular project includes a book jacket/cover
made with a different type of fine paper.

Hideyuki Fukuda (studio Fuku-De) appears in the October 2015 issue.
The paper used is MERMAID.
This fine paper is characterized by a texture that comes from
being feltmarked with a gentle wave-like pattern.

One first notices how this fine paper is evenly adorned with foil stamping in silver.
A closer look reveals that the design is made up of circular and square dots,
with circular dots representing the surface of the water and square dots representing fish.
And, depending on the viewing angle, the jacket design
causes images of swimming fish to stand out from the paper.

The jacket takes advantage of MERMAID's ripple-like texture to express
in a refreshing way light scattering on the water's surface and the scales of the fish.
