This is the second exhibition under the A-Y Exchange project that links two of TAKEO’s main showrooms
in East and West Japan: Aoyama MIHONCHO and Yodoyabashi MIHONCHO.

[Yodoyabashi MIHONCHO] SPREAD Exhibition GIFT/STACK

With society currently dealing with a number of overlapping issues for which the outcome is uncertain,
it’s no exaggeration to say that we are living at a turning point in history. Under the circumstances,
what came to us were two perspectives, namely, gifting and stacking.
We think these perspectives can provide hints for how to dispel this situation in which we feel heavily burdened by uncertainty.

This exhibition presents two works.

One is Much Peace, Love and Joy, which was produced in the hope of using color to bring about joy in the world
at a time of suffering. This installation involved printing one-of-a-kind gradations using a special letterpress
printing process, tearing up each sheet by hand, and gathering the individual scraps of paper into a number of stacks.
The stacks of paper scraps function as metaphors for the accumulation of diverse existences, situations, concepts,
times, and phenomena. They could perhaps be thought of as flowers, stones, islands, or birds,
or maybe as accumulations of ice, time, or memories, but they are sure to inspire different thoughts
in the imaginations of everyone who views the installation.
The exhibition also shares with the public part of the process of creating the work.

The other work is a FINE FLUTE Gift Box, which we are developing together with TAKEO.
The work is an attempt to aim for new values by adding fine paper to a simple two-piece box
made of corrugated cardboard. The lid of the paper box, which comes in different colors and textures,
allows for mixing and matching, providing a wide variety of possible color combinations.
The show presents prototypes.

Print, cut off, arrange, choose, combine, stack. What we are doing with both works is extremely simple,
and not some kind of new technology. We assess the situation, respond by reflecting internally,
and stack up what we are able to achieve. And we do that with great care.
